Ten 20ga 925 Sterling Silver Jump Rings - Choose Size

All sizes listed are INTERNAL DIAMETER. If you need to know the outer diameter of rings, contact me and I can help!

I am offering the jumprings that I make and use myself for my jewelry creations. All of the rings listed are wound and saw cut by me in my home workshop, from guaranteed REAL genuine sterling silver sourced from a domestic refinery. After cutting, they are thoroughly tumble polished and burnished to properly harden and stabilize the surface. This helps to both resist tarnish, and make cleaning easier when they do need a quick shine. As well, it prefects the saw cut edges to make these rings perfect for fine jewelry creations.

What is 'Sterling Silver'?
The term is around a thousand years old, and the exact origin of 'sterling' is debated, but for our modern uses it refers to silver that is at least 92.5% pure. Classically, the remaining 7.5% is copper, but there have been several new tarnish resistant (NOT tarnish proof) formulas developed such as Argentium. this 92.5% number is a metallurgical 'sweet spot' that balances a dramatic increase in strength with minimal color change.

What is 'Fine Silver'?

Fine silver is as pure as it gets - 99.9%. it is very shiny, very pretty, and soft enough to dent with a fingernail. This is why pure silver isn't used very often in jewelry, it's just too fragile for regular wear and tear.

What is 'Silver Plated'?

Silver plated metal is some form of base metal - often copper or brass, but it really can be anything, including allergenic metals like nickel. If you buy silver plated wire, always be sure what the plated metal is before you buy. A few microns of silver are deposited over the base metal usually via the electroplating method, causing a mostly permanent thin layer of silver. Without some sort of protective coating overtop, plated silver tend to quickly wear thin or flake off.

What is 'Silver Filled'?

Silver filled wire became popular during the recent metal price spike associated with the economic downturn. It is a brass wire that has had silver heat and pressure bonded onto the surface. The overall content is 10% silver, and the layer is hudreds of times thicker than silver plate. It generally holds up well to regular wear and tear, but surprisingly it is not siginificantly less expensive that 92.5% sterling silver. Gold filled wire, which as been around a bit longer, is about 5% the cost of pure gold - last time I checked, silver filled wire was only a dollar or two less expensive than real sterling.

Sum it up, Dave! Sheesh!

Here's the quick version: for silver chainmail, always buy sterling. Plated wire does not hold up for long (unless it is enameled, which has its own challenges), fine silver is too soft, and silver filled isn't enough of a price difference to be worth the hassle.

Care instructions

Copper: The enameled copper that I work with is very tarnish resistant. Anything short of a very aggressive abrasive is unlikely to damage the surface.

Silver and Gold: Real silver and gold tarnish over time - even Argentium, despite what you may have heard. I work with traditional Sterling Silver, which can be cleaned with a silver dip cleaner that can be purchased at any retail location that sells jewelry. The same applies to 14kt, 18kt, and gold fill wire - I recommend a gold dip cleaner. For mixed metals, use a generic jewelry cleaner or the aforementioned silver dip cleaner. All of the stones I work with are safe in a dip cleaner, unless specifically mentioned otherwise in the item description.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Bracelets and necklaces are generally packaged in a traditional 8" x 2" x 1" kraft box, pendants and earrings are packaged in my own custom 2" x 2" printed boxes. If you have a special request, just contact me and I'll accommodate you if I can!
